Course Description: Oil paint can be used in many ways to express your ideas and concepts. As it is a versatile medium with rich pigments the end results are very satisfying. The course will explore the different methods used with Oil paint from rich glazing to thick impasto with a pallet knife or stiff brush (Alla Prima technique) sketching with oils. As individuals will have different ideas and approaches, learning a range of techniques is vital to carrying out and completing works with the desired conclusion and also helps to push your ideas and works further in the future. The course will demonstrate the correct use of mediums with oils paint, brush technique, preparing a canvas for the purpose of achieving a certain effect. Conceptual guidance and development will also be a strong part of the course. Tuition for those wishing to achieve good results with flesh tones is also available for those who want to work in a figurative area. The first three weeks will be working from a still life setup , focusing on colour theory and the development of what is known as your personal pallet preference and learning how to use it to its full capacity.
Equipment List: Philippa will bring in a supply of basic colours, mediums, brushes and pallet knives for the first week to demonstrate what your purchase may want to be. This avoids purchasing what you don't need.

Philippa Hofgartner is a professional practicing artist with many years experience painting and exhibiting both in Australia and in Europe. She is a graduate of the Canberra Institute of the Arts (ANU). She has work in the Australian National Library Collection and the Monash University Library Collection. She has lived and worked in many countries, thus gaining a wide and varied knowledge of International art practices, both cultural and historical. Click here for examples of her work. Beautiful Beaded Jewellery - Beginners

Course description: This course teaches you the essentials of beading technique. Each week we will build on what you have learnt in the previous week. You will make stunning jewellery so that you will always have a piece of jewellery to complement an outfit and will never be short of a gift for family or friends.
The first class will cover the basic techniques for making beaded jewellery such as making “wire headpin”, “tigertails” etc. moving on to more advanced techniques in later classes; treadwork, wirework and stringing pearls. You will make about 2 pairs of earrings, 2 necklaces, a ring and a bracelet. Using Swarovski crystal, semi-precious gems, freshwater pearls and glass beads you will produce high quality jewellery for a fraction of the cost that you would purchase at a boutique store.

Calligraphy - Beginners & Continuing

Description: The year will start with a study of a basic script in calligraphy, ROMAN. Then FRADTUR, a 'Gothic/Old English' type of lettering, will be offered for the more experienced. Layout and the use of colour will be covered. Continuation of the use of VERSALS (decorated capitals) from Term 4 last year will be encouraged.
Angela Hillier attended Portsmouth College of Art, studying full-time design, publicity and display. She has studied with local, national and international tutors and is a foundation member of the Canberra Calligraphy Society. She was chair of the Society in 1994, 19 95, 19 96, 2001, 2002 and 2003 and has just been elected Life Member of the Society. Course description: This course will teach you the essentials of card and box making. You will also learn several different techniques and take home a range of completed cards and two boxes. Once you’ve taken this class you’ll have the knowledge and confidence you need to create beautiful handmade cards
The class is suitable for those that have never made a card before to those with some experience with card making but want to learn more techniques. Come along and learn how easy it is to make your own cards and amaze your family and friends with your creations.

Description:The drawing course will support students with little to no knowledge of drawing to gain confidence with a variety of drawing media. The course is structured to enable beginners to produce realistic drawings. Students will be guided and encouraged to try different techniques in drawing including drawing on the right hand side of the brain, negative and positive space, composition and colour to build essential skills.
Materials:
- A4 sketch pad.
- 20 sheets of newsprint paper
- Charcoal thin and thick
- Graphite pencils 4B -8B
- A2 size cartridge paper - 8 sheets
- Coloured pastels a set (8-12) of earth tones and basic colours, black and white also

Judith Fuller is an artist who graduated in architecture and practiced in the profession in Australia and overseas over the span of 10 years. She studied fine art over the span of 20 years at private studios, the University of Canberra, the ANU and in the USA specialising in painting and drawing at a graduate level. She teaches drawing and painting and has exhibited her work in Canberra and the US. Her work is held in several private collections in Australia and the US
Life Drawing and Portraiture

Description: This course focuses on drawing the nude as well as portraiture and will support students interested in life drawing and/or painting to gain confidence with a variety of media. The level of knowledge required is not important as the course is tailored for beginners as well as for the experienced. Students will gain experience using washes, ink, crayons and other media. The aim is to build student confidence to use a variety of media in the same work. Students will be guided and encouraged to try different drawing and painting techniques as well as build skills regarding negative and positive space, composition and colour. They will have the choice to produce several works during the workshop or focus on one piece. Students need to wear old and comfortable clothing and bring old jars and rags to clean up as well as some food to share. Tea and coffee will be supplied.

Livestock & Fibre Craft Workshops

Glynda runs a variety of “hands-on” livestock workshops to help new and experienced owners to enjoy managing their livestock. By understanding husbandry, management & training owners have productive and happy livestock which are easy to handle and enjoy. After being in breeding alpacas for many years she began to take a great interest in how to use the fibre from her alpacas & llamas. She has developed several fibre craft courses, spinning using an electronic spinning wheel, introductory and advanced felting, dyeing, knitting & crocheting.
Glynda is also a Life Coach & Mentor concentrating on rural lifestyle and livestock matters.

Course description: Learn to design and make a small mosaic table top or wall plaque. You will learn to select and cut the tiles to suit your design. The base and a variety of coloured tiles and some tools will be supplied. Feel free to bring along any found objects or preferred materials for your project. Click here for past class pictures.
Tina van Raay is now a full time artist working from home. From a background in teaching, theatre directing, politics, consulting, landscaping and managing a large drug and alcohol agency, Tina now focuses on producing glass mosaics and stained glass items, many of which sit very happily in garden settings. Her back garden is testimony to the idea that art and gardens can go hand in hand. Galley 12’s exhibition of Tina’s glass mosaics held in August 2009 was highly successful and considered unique in the ACT. While this exhibition was on, Tina was attending a marble mosaics course in Ravenna, Italy. Click here for pictures.

Painting With Acrylics

Description: Quick drying Acrylic paint can be used in many ways to express the content of a painting. Applications can vary from thin glazes to thick impasto renderings with pallet knives. This course will explore different ways of making acrylic paintings to find the right technique for creating future works that can help the student express ideas and concepts clearly. It will demonstrate the basic methods and equipment a painter requires to prepare painting surfaces and a workspace. Click here for pictures. The starting point of each session will be from a central still life visual display. Each session will incorporate a discussion on techniques and methods developed by a particular artist and students will be encouraged to use a visual diary to develop their own unique ideas and concepts for the final painting. Course materials: (Note: Cherylynn advises that it is best to see the equipment on the first night to avoid buying inadequate brushes and or unnecessary items. She will have a supply of brushes and other items needed for the course on the first night to show the students.)

Cherylynn Holmes has been a practicing artist with many years experience as an exhibiting painter, designer, and award winning scenic artist for the theatre, contemporary dance and museum exhibitions. Cherylynn has studied in at the National Art School Sydney (East Sydney Tech) and is a graduate of The Canberra School of Art painting department, with a sub-major in printmaking. She has been an active community based artist within NSW and the ACT and has lived and worked in Europe, gaining a wide knowledge of western historical and contemporary art practice.

Patchwork Quilting - Beginners

Course description: This is a low key, relaxing course which will explore the fundamentals of patchwork quilting. Over the four weeks participants will look at some of the traditional blocks used in patchwork quilting. Participants will complete, at least two blocks, and complete a cushion. No sewing experience is necessary. The less the better. Participants will hand sew but can adapt the techniques for machine sewing if required.
Materials - for the first session coloured pencils and cardboard are required. Participants will then need to purchase material for the remaining sessions but this will be discussed more fully as the first session.
Dolores Schneider - learnt how to quilt in the USA and enjoys the relaxation of being with a group of like minded people -people who like to sit, sew and chat.

Description: During this course we will explore both hand-building and wheelwork. Hand-building includes the techniques of pinching, coiling, and slab-building, techniques that are used to manipulate clay into free-form pieces. On the potter's wheel you will learn throwing and associated skills. You will be taught how to centre clay and pull up basic cylinder and bowl forms. These forms are the stepping stones to more complex shapes. You will learn to decorate and glaze your pots using coloured slips and brush-on glazes while the work is fired for you, you will gain fundamental knowledge of the firing process.
Maryke Henderson is an active member of the Canberra Potter' Society where she is currently teaching. She has taught for many years in educational establishments, workshops and from her own studio when she lived in the Tamworth region of NSW. After many years of professional potting, Maryke undertook full-time studies at the ANU School of Art, graduating with Honours in 2005. She has won numerous awards for her Soda Glazed Ceramics and has featured in The Journal of Australian Ceramics and Ceramics. TECHNICAL.

Description: The aims of this course are not only to introduce people to the fun of working with wood but also to allow people to work on their own timber projects by using our well equipped workshop at Lake Ginninderra. We cater for students who are just beginning to work with wood and then increase the skill level involved to suit increasing experience. We also cater for people who are experienced in working with timber and want to use the comprehensive range of power tools and facilities that the workshop is able to offer. The course fee covers the use of the workshop including all tools, equipment, basic supplies (e.g. sandpaper, glue, nails etc). It does not cover timber or other materials (e.g. Glass, brass fittings, stain or estapol, etc) required for your project. Most people either bring their own timber or after discussion with the teacher purchase it after week one.

Watercolour - Beginning and Continuing

Description: This course is aimed at beginners with watercolour, but welcomes all continuing students. It will cover the basic techniques of watercolour painting. You will be encouraged to release your creative spirits in your own way. As Degas said "There is my way, there is your way, but there is no 'the way'." It is hoped that you will learn to see as an artist, learn about brushes and other applicators and watercolour papers, and that you will experiment with techniques. You will be encouraged to find your way by experimenting with colour, technique and composition and translating your inner vision.

Course content:
- Session 1 - Talk about bushes, paper palette, colours and how to prepare board to begin painting. Exercises - wet-in-wet & brush techniques.
- Session 2 - Paint reasonably simple watercolours with limited palette.
- Session 3 - Tonal chart, followed by mixing greys.
- Session 4 - Mixing greens and mixing blacks. Textures - using sponges, brushes, palette knife, etc.
- Session 5 - Using 'cool' neutrals for background- silhouetted foreground.
- Session 6 - Landscape subject of choice - bring photo of scene.
- Session 7 - Floral subject of choice - bring photo of flowers from garden.
- Session 8 - Paint watercolour using above ideas.

Nell Anderson has studied art in Canberra and at the Camden Art Centre in London and has received a number of awards for Watercolours and pen & ink work. She has been a guest artist with David Jones in Canberra on six occasions; four of those were in conjunction with the annual David Jones Spring Flower Shows. To date, Nell has held eight joint exhibitions and fifteen solo exhibitions in Canberra and interstate. Her work is represented in many overseas private collections. Nell joined A.I.M (Art in Miniatures - Canberra) in February 2004. She has also held solo exhibitions for the past two years at The Studio Gallery in Duffy and will do so again in September 2006

Welding for Beginners

Description: The aim of this course is to give you knowledge and skills to safely weld mild steel using Oxy-Acetylene, MIG and Electric Arc processes. You will learn about each process, how to set up the machines, how to prepare metals for welding, how to safely operate the various welders and the different techniques able to be used with each process. A series of exercises will gradually build your confidence to enable you to manufacture well made articles of your choice. This course is a useful pre-requisite for Metal projects.
