Course Description

Weeks 1-4: Beginners

Have you always wished you knew how to sew so you could make clothing and accessories for yourself, or some of those gorgeous craft projects you’ve seen on Pinterest? Perhaps you’ve dabbled with your sewing machine but would love to brush up on your techniques and attempt some more challenging projects.

Who is this course for?:

Sew like a Pro Beginners is for people who are completely new to sewing, or have limited sewing skills they would like to develop. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace on a number of different projects (patterns and instructions provided) to complete throughout the course.

The course will cover:

  • Fabric basics: Different types of fabric (woven, non-woven and knit), how to cut/finish different types of fabric, how to select the best fabric for your project
  • How to choose the best type and colour thread for your project
  • Tools of the trade – scissors, bobbins, seam ripper, pins, tailor’s chalk, etc.
  • Using a pattern and cutting fabric
  • Mastering your sewing machine
  • Sewing techniques such as seam finishes, hem finishes, using embellishments such as lace, inserting a zip, buttonholes and more.
  • Projects such as: a drawstring bag, placemats, and napkins, throw cushions, padded coat hangers, an eye mask and more.

Materials List

  • Please bring your own sewing machine with a manual.  My sewing machine will be available for use, but I will also need to use this for demonstrations.
  • Sewing equipment including: pins, scissors, tape measure, fabric marking pen or chalk, hand sewing needles, pencil, glue stick, 30cm ruler and notebook for making notes.
  • Fabric. Limited fabric and trims will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring medium weight woven cotton fabric (such as printed quilting fabric or cotton poplin) to work with. Fabric can be purchased after the first lesson.
  • Thread to match your chosen fabric.

FAQ’s

1.       There are lots of online courses and tutorials on sewing, what makes this course different?

Whilst there are many good online resources for sewing, face-to-face learning will help improve your confidence with various sewing techniques, using your specific sewing machine. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace and ask questions throughout the course. This course also provides a great opportunity to meet other local sewing enthusiasts.

2.       I’ve never sewn before, will I struggle to keep up?

No, not at all. The course will cover basic techniques and students can select beginner projects to nurture their skills at their own pace.

3.       I’ve had some experience sewing and really want to develop my skills. Will the course stretch my ability?

Yes. Once you’ve mastered the basics you can extend your skills with new projects and techniques. Depending on how quickly you work, you could try a new project each week.
